Are Timber Wall Panels Do It Yourself Friendly?
While no professional experience is required, some familiarity with basic DIY projects and woodworking tools is recommended. Depending on your wall dimensions, you may need to rip the final board to width if the space isn't perfectly divisible by the panel coverage. Installation also requires sanding and finishing the raw timber, as well as blind nailing the boards to hold them in place while the clue dries. As a minimum, you should have access to a table saw or track saw(if your space is not divisible by the width of the boards), sander, brad nail gun with brad nails, tape measure, level, and your preferred timber finish.
How to install Timber Wall Panelling?
Installing timber wall panelling is a straightforward DIY project, though it does require some preparation. Before installation, lightly sand all boards and cut them to the required lengths. While you can apply the final finish before installation, many people prefer to apply the last coat after the panels are installed for a more consistent finish.
Begin by marking a level reference line on your wall or furniture to ensure the first board is perfectly straight. Apply a suitable construction adhesive or glue to the back of the first panel, position it in place, and secure it with brad nails.
Continue installing each subsequent panel by applying adhesive, engaging the tongue-and-groove joint, and fixing with brad nails (blind nailing). The nails hold the boards in place while the adhesive cures and are concealed once the next board is installed.
Once all panels are fitted, fill any visible nail holes if required, lightly sand any filled areas, and apply your chosen paint, stain, oil, or clear finish to complete the installation.
As mentioned above, the final panel will often need to be ripped to width to achieve a neat finish where the wall dimensions are not perfectly divisible by the panel coverage.
Why Choose Timber Wall Panelling Over Cheaper MDF or Veneer Alternatives?
MDF wall panelling is an excellent option when the finished product will be painted. However, if you're looking for a natural timber finish, solid timber wall panelling is in a different league. Unlike MDF, real timber can be stained, oiled, or clear-coated to showcase its natural grain, warmth, and character.
While there are lower-cost veneered products available on the market that imitate solid timber, they rarely achieve the same depth or texture when viewed up close.
