Australian Made Sustainable Timber Alternatives | Working With Crafted Hardwoods
Australian Made Sustainable Timber Alternatives | Working With Crafted Hardwoods
Over the last 80 years, Hammersmith has had the privilege of working alongside countless Australian-owned and operated businesses: from stairbuilders, to timber merchants, to furniture makers.
As a fourth-generation South Australian business, we’ve always valued partnerships with local manufacturers who share our commitment to quality and sustainability. That’s why we’re especially excited to be partnering with Crafted Hardwoods, a home-grown innovation proudly manufactured in Adelaide that is redefining what’s possible with Australian timber. Together, we’ve brought a new range of staircase components that showcase the strength and beauty of their sustainably engineered wood.

We’re particularly excited about their Blackbutt and Spotted Gum EWP (Engineered wood product) offerings. Traditionally, these timber species have been difficult to use in production — their natural oiliness prevents effective lamination, while their tendency to bow & twist makes machining a challenge. Crafted Hardwoods’ technology has overcome these limitations, opening the door to new applications for these highly sought-after Australian hardwoods.
At Hammersmith, our family business has deep roots in the woodturning industry. Over the past eight decades, we’ve witnessed significant changes in the timber trade, with species that were once plentiful becoming increasingly scarce — such as Victorian Ash, due to shifting logging allocations. To meet these challenges, we’ve continually sought out innovative solutions — from finger-jointed timbers like American Red Oak, Glacial Oak, and Pine, through to the exciting possibilities now offered by engineered wood products.
SUPPORTING LOCAL MANUFACTURING
Partnering with fellow Adelaide-based manufacturer like Crafted Hardwoods is about more than just convenience — it’s about strengthening local industry. By working together, we help create a more resilient supply chain, support South Australian jobs, and keep manufacturing skills and expertise right here at home.

Local partnerships also mean shorter lead times, reduced transport costs, and a lower carbon footprint — all of which benefit not just our customers, but the broader community.
At Hammersmith, we believe that collaboration with other local manufacturers is key to building a stronger, more sustainable future for the timber industry in Australia. Our partnership with Crafted Hardwoods is a great example of how Adelaide businesses can work together to deliver innovative products, while continuing to invest in the communities we’re proud to be part of.
SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE LOGGING
Sustainability sits at the core of our partnership with Crafted Hardwoods. Their engineered wood products unlock the potential of timber resources that would traditionally be downgraded to chips or pulp. Instead, these resources are turned into high-performance material that doubles the yield from every log, adds valuable timber back into the industry, and ensures each tree harvested is used to its full potential.
Crafted Hardwoods sources its raw material from responsibly managed, certified forests, meaning the products we distribute meet rigorous environmental and ethical standards. The result is timber that is not only beautiful and durable, but also contributes to a more sustainable building industry.
By choosing to work with local, sustainable suppliers, we can offer our customers high-quality timber products while supporting practices that protect Australia’s forests for future generations. Together, we’re helping to build a timber industry that is innovative, responsible, and environmentally conscious.
WHY WE LOVE IT
Even some of our longest-serving team members are impressed by Crafted Hardwoods’ engineered timber. Take Mark, our maintenance engineer, who just celebrated 50 years with Hammersmith. He was immediately sold; impressed by the weight and quality of the product, as well as how easily it machines.
It’s a truly unique product that not only performs exceptionally but also looks amazing. Mark was so confident in its quality that he didn’t hesitate to say: “If I were building a staircase, these are the treads I’d use.”
For us, that’s the ultimate endorsement — coming from someone who’s spent a lifetime working with timber. It’s proof that innovation, sustainability, and quality to create a product that both professionals and enthusiasts can rely on.
