FAQs

Where would you normally use a stainless steel wire cable?
The most common application is balustrading but there are many other uses for it including; shade structures, architectural rigging, cable trellis, shop fittings, and marine applications.

What is it made out of?
316 Stainless Steel.

What is the difference between 1x19, 7x7, and 7x19 configurations?

The 1x19 cable is slightly stronger than the other cables but is the least flexible. It is also the nicest-looking cable due to the fewer strands of wire that make it up.
The 7x7 cable is semi-flexible, and has a lesser breaking load than compared to the 1x19, but greater than 7x19.
The 7x19 cable is the most flexible, which allows it to loop back on itself without kinking. It has the lowest breaking load of the 3.
If you are using the wire for balustrading; in particular in conjunction with fittings that require the use of a hydraulic swager, either of the 3 wires wire will be fine; but if you are using fittings that need the cable to wrap around a thimble, then the more flexible 7x7 or 7x19 cable is a much easier option for this purpose.

Can it be used for exterior applications?
As it is 316 grade Stainless Steel it is more than suitable to be used inside or outside.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Without regular cleaning and maintenance discolouration of the surface of the stainless steel by corrosion (tea staining) can occur.

How to reduce the risk of tea staining

  • Absence of corrosives – especially salt, chlorine, cleaning acids etc.
  • Atmospheric Conditions – lower temperatures and low humidity are better.
  • Surface orientation – Open exposure to rain washing is better
  • Surface Finish – In general a smoother finish is better. where practical mirror polish finish may perform better than a brushed finish.
  • Chemical cleanliness or passivation of the surface improves corrosion resistance
  • Appropriate grade selection for conditions
  • Regular Maintenance to limit the accumulation of corrosives

Stainless steel cleaning schedule

The frequency of cleaning will vary depending on environmental factors i.e. proximity to the ocean, atmospheric and urban conditions. Below is intended as a guide and should be varied as required. We recommend using peek stainless steel polish for maintenance.

Environment Distance from Coastline Cleaning Schedule
Clean inland environment 20km + Every 10 - 12 Months
Moderate urban or coastal environment 1-5km Every 4 - 6 Months
Harsh urban or coastal environment < 500m Every 2 - 3 Months
Severe coastal/ marine environment < 500m Every 1 - 2 Weeks
