Description
Where would you normally use timber handrail volute (or scroll) ?
As a decorative way of terminating the handrail at the bottom of a staircase. Combined with a bullnose tread, a volute (aka scroll) will give any staircase that look of grandeur.
How do I know whether I need a left hand or right hand one?
Standing at the bottom of a staircase and looking up the stair, a left hand volute is on your left side, and a right hand volute is on your right.
What is it made out of?
Plantation grown Australian Oak (depending on availability it is either Victorian Ash or Tasmanian Oak).
How do you fix it to the handrail?
Use either the Zipbolt ST-Maxi UT or Zipbolt UT Rail Bolt. Glue the join and then apply a small amount of sanding to blend.
How should you finish it?
If looking for a natural finish, then a clear lacquer will be fine; or you can use a stain to achieve your desired colour then use a clear lacquer to finish it off.
