Hammersmith Woodturners is an Australian-owned & operated woodturning company

Hammersmith Woodturners is a leading Australian woodturner, proudly owned and operated in Australia since 1946. Originally established by EJ (Ted) Groth, a skilled toolmaker, Hammersmith began as a small, family-run woodturning business in Ted's backyard. Over the decades, we have grown into one of Australia's premier woodturning companies, offering a wide range of woodworking services.

A Legacy of Australian Woodturning

As Australian woodturners, Hammersmith started by producing small wooden souvenirs, turned timber legs, and other custom woodturning items for the furniture trade. Today, our expertise has expanded into larger-scale projects including custom woodturning for furniture, stair builders, and wholesalers across the country.

Over the years, the business has grown into a much larger scale operation, moving into mouldings, handrails, CNC work & much, much more. The company employs in excess of 20 staff, and services a range of different industries- from furniture makers, to stair builders and wholesalers.

We sell a range of stocked & pre-made products, such as furniture legs, stair handrails, and turned verandah posts. However, custom woodturning still makes up a large portion of our work.

Custom Woodturning Examples

At Hammersmith, custom woodturning is at the heart of our business. From projects like billiard table legs and furniture pieces, to coffin spindles, plugs and hadles, we’ve completed a wide variety of jobs that demonstrate our expertise.

Custom Billiard Table Legs

Manufactured from 145sq Radiata Pine, these ginormous billiard table legs were an absolute blast to make. We’ve turned all sorts of pool, billiard table and game table legs over the years- and they always turned out great 😉!

Turned Wooden Table Columns

While we stock a range of turned table legs and columns, sometimes customers are looking for something a little more unique.

Over the years we’ve turned legs of all different sizes, shapes and timber species. These columns in particular were turned from Victorian Ash (similar to Tasmanian Oak, sometimes referred to as Australian Oak). The density of this timber makes it difficult to turn, but the results are absolutely worth the extra effort!

Coffin spindles

Over the years we’ve accrued customers from all walks of life, and a variety of different professions. While most of our customers come from furniture or stair building backgrounds, that certainly isn’t the case for everyone.

For years, Hammersmith woodturners have been manufacturing coffin spindles & handles for many of Australia’s leading casket & coffin makers. In fact, some of these relationships go back as far as 1998!

It just goes to show you just how far reaching the demand for turned timber products is, and just how versatile our woodworking machinery can be!

Rolling pins

Hammersmith don’t just take on repeat woodturning jobs either, we’re more than happy to set for larger one-off projects. As was the case with these rolling pins, which were commissioned by a local Australian school for their Pottery Classes.

The whole process took less than a month to complete (from quoting to completion), and the customer was extremely happy with the finished product.
