Boosting Production: Our New Doweling Machine Has Arrived
Boosting Production: Our New Doweling Machine Has Arrived
A few months back, Hammersmith purchased a brand-new doweling machine to reduce the load on our moulder, improve the finish on some of our smaller dowels, and expand our production capabilities.
The difference has been noticeable from the start. The new machine produces beautifully uniform dowels while significantly reducing turnaround times, largely because setup is much quicker and easier than the profile moulder.
So, if you have noticed reduced turnaround times on your moulding jobs—this is why!
One of the biggest advantages of the new doweling machine is flexibility. We can now offer quicker turnaround times and reduced minimum run quantities on the following non-stock diameters: 18mm, 23mm, 28mm, 44mm, 53mm, 54mm and 65mm.
Not only does the new machine give us more freedom to support smaller run custom jobs without long lead times, but it also helps us stay on top of stock levels for our standard sizes: 19mm, 25mm, 32mm, 38mm, 43mm, 50mm and 60mm.
Alongside the new machinery, we’ve also expanded our timber offering to include Crafted Hardwoods’ EWP products in Spotted Gum and Blackbutt. This is in addition to Victorian Ash/Tasmanian Oak, American Red Oak, Pine, Spotted Gum and Blackbutt.
From a manufacturing standpoint, the doweling machine frees up our profile moulder for more complex custom profiles and speciality runs. That means faster turnaround on stocked handrail profiles and greater capacity for custom work overall, which is a win for both factory efficiency and our customers.
And the best part? It’s surprisingly user-friendly. Even the sales and marketing team (yes, the ones writing this article) have had a go at running it!
As well as having the machine to make the dowels; we also purchased a machine that can sand them. For some timbers it is not necessary to sand the dowel, as the finish that we get off of the doweling machine is very good; but there are timbers which benefit from being sanded, so it really does depend on a job by job basis as to whether we will sand the dowels.
